CSRD Deadlines and Who is In Scope (2025-2030)
The CSRD rollout is happening in waves, not all at once. Think of it like boarding an airplane - different groups get called at different times.
The Master Timeline
2025 - The Early Adopters
Who: Companies already subject to NFRD (Non-Financial Reporting Directive) First report due: 2025 (covering 2024 data) That means: About 11,600 large EU companies
2026 - The Large Companies
Who: Large companies not previously covered by NFRD First report due: 2026 (covering 2025 data) That means: Most big European businesses
2027 - The Listed SMEs
Who: Listed small and medium companies (except micro-enterprises) First report due: 2027 (covering 2026 data) That means: Smaller public companies
2029 - The International Players
Who: Non-EU companies with significant EU presence First report due: 2029 (covering 2028 data) That means: US, UK, Asian companies operating in EU
Are You In Scope? The Decision Tree
Question 1: Are you an EU company?
If YES, continue to Question 2. If NO, skip to the "Non-EU Companies" section.
Question 2: Are you "large" by EU standards?
You're "large" if you meet 2 of 3 criteria:
- 250+ employees (average during the year)
- €50 million+ revenue (net turnover)
- €25 million+ total assets (balance sheet total)
If YES, you're in scope starting 2025 or 2026. If NO, continue to Question 3.
Question 3: Are you listed on an EU regulated market?
If YES, you're in scope starting 2027 (unless you're a micro-enterprise). If NO, congratulations - you're likely exempt!
Non-EU Companies: The 2029 Wave
You're caught if you have:
- €150 million+ EU revenue for 2 consecutive years
- AND either:
- An EU subsidiary that's "large", or
- An EU branch with €40 million+ revenue
